TOWN
ON THE
TORRS

A unique insight into New Mills, with personal views, local archive films and images of the Lantern Procession, Carnival, New Mills Band and the Art Theatre.

The Town on the Torrs DVD or Video is now available from The Derbyshire BS in Union Rd, Bookstop in Market St, the Heritage Centre or from Festival Committee members - £7.50.

New Mills Community Festival received a £10,000 grant from the Local Heritage Initiative for a project designed to raise awareness of the heritage of New Mills amongst local people and visitors.

The DVD takes the Community Festival as a starting point. Over the last four years, since the opening of the Millennium Walkway in the gorge, the Festival has closed with a dramatic finale event - a candle-lit procession through the gorge, with fire effects designed in conjunction with the North West's leading pyrotechnics company paBoom!.

Local Heritage Initiative
is administered by the Countryside Agency for the Heritage Lottery Fund, with support from the Nationwide Building Society.

The Festival themes of fire and water and the geographical setting among the old mills by the River Goyt feed into the design of the DVD to create a unique picture of the town's history.

A group comprising of members of the Festival Committee, members of the Local History Society and a group of 5 sixth-form students, worked with project manager Rosemary Richards to make the DVD.
