Hi everyone,
Well the 2008 season has ended now. Although we have not had the best of weather, the season has been a successful one. Memberships have again reached the £3000 mark, and we have picked up about 5 extra senior members this season. This is a good achievement because we received less money from the school this year (they used the courts less).
The junior teams have now completed their fixtures. The mixed team have struggled in division 3 but managed to draw 2 matches from 5 played and finished above Bowdon. The Boys u-18s team finished fourth, winning 4 and drawing 1 from 8 played. Having secured promotion last year, it was disappointing to see our Mens NE Cheshire team relegated back to division 4. We had a great start to the season, with a draw and a win from our first two matches. Many of the others were lost by a single set. In retrospect we would have needed 4 wins and a draw from ten played to stay up, which would have been a tall order. This season is my last as captain, having spent the last 8 seasons running the team.
We are now focused on the winter league where we finished 3rd last year in division 6, narrowly missing promotion.
The club held a very successful Open Day on Saturday 13th September. This was well attended, with all sections running competitive events. We held a Mens singles event which was won by Colin Barratt who defeated Andy Wise in the final. It was a great effort from Andy though who had a tough match against Billy Craven in the semi-final. Gareth West played well too to get to the semis and only narrowly lost out 6-4 to Colin in the semi
Results of our 2nd Mens Singles of 2008
Semi-finals :
Colin Barratt defeated Gareth West 6-4
Andy Wise defeated Billy Craven - 7-5
Final :
Colin Barratt defeated Andy Wise 6-1
Junior coaching has had a successful year too with many tournaments held and excellent progress made.
Throughout the winter season, the club will be offering :
- Regular social tennis on Sunday mornings
- Winter league matches
- Indoor tennis at Sportscity
- Social events in the clubhouse
The Christmas meal this year will take place on Saturday 20th December at the Sportsman in Hayfield.
On the International tennis scene, Roger Federer finally got a Slam title, defeating Andy Murray in the final of the US Open. It was a great achievement for Murray too, defeating del Potro and Nadal on his way to the final. Now the new World no 4, Murray is well placed to get a Slam title next year (best chances are at the US or Australian).
Next events up are the indoor season ones, Madrid, Paris etc
See you on court
