Hi everyone,
Well the 2008 season is now drawing to a close. The weather was very kind to us at the beginning of the season but alas has not been so good in recent weeks. However, we have had a good season with many things accomplished.
Memberships are running at the level of last year, and we have had good interest in social tennis. Many of our juniors are also coming to the social tennis sessions. The Boys junior team did well in their first season, winning half of their matches played.
Unfortunatley, due to lack of interest from other clubs, there has not been a High Peak league this year. It is looking unlikely that there will be one in the near future. On a brighter note, the winter league is due to start again soon, with the fixtures meeting in September. Last season we narrowly missed out on promotion, finishing third in the division.
The North East Cheshire Mens Team were relegated this season. We lost a number of very close matches (3 by a single set). This plus a serious injury I sustained at the end of June made it hard for us. However, it was a good effort from all concerned and I am proud of the effort we put in in my last season as captain. Joe Heard-White will be taking over team duties next season, as well as helping with this year's winter league.
We held a successful Mens Open Singles in May. This was won by Colin Barratt. This will be followed by another event on Sunday 29th August, 1 pm start. On Sunday 13th September, the club hosts its annual open day as an integral part of the New Mills Festival.
Overall the club is doing well and we are hoping to get the courts resprayed next season.
On the International Tennis scene, Rafael Nadal played superbly to deny Roger Federer a sixth consecutive Wimbledon title. The final will be remembered for a long time. Venus Williams made yet another comeback, to beat Serena in the final. Since Wimbledon, Nadal has won Toronto and Andy Murray made the breakthrough at Cincinnati, winning his first Masters Series title. As I write, Nadal and Gonzalez will be competing for the gold medal at the Olympics on Sunday.
The US Open starts in 10 days. Murray has a great chance. If he doesn't win, I'm hoping that Roger can find his form !!! The Ladies is wide open with Sharapova out with injury and Henin retired. I'm tipping Safina.
See you on court (now better)
