Sett Valley Community Association

News: Sett Valley Community Association to be dissolved.

For the last 3 years the Community Association has been campaigning to improve things for people living in the East Ward of New Mills.

We have been involved with lots of activities like clean-up campaigns, getting new grit bins, cutting back overgrowth on Watford Bridge Road. The committee members have also been involved in a lot of the work being done by the New Mills Town Partnership and the Fairtrade – New Mills group.

It has been difficult to increase the membership of the group, especially as there isn’t a central point to meet at. The committee have therefore taken the decision to dissolve the Association and to put their energy into other projects that will help the local community.

There will be a meeting at Low Leighton Methodist Church, High Hill Rd on Tuesday 9th May. The meeting will start at 7pm and will formally dissolve the Association. We will also be presenting the Millers Parade committee with a cheque for the funds remaining in our account. .

What is a Community Association?
A Community Association is a group set up by residents who want to work together to improve their local area.

The Sett Valley Association was formed in April 2003 after a meeting held at Ventura Court.

What does the Association do?
The aim of the Association is to work to improve the lives of the residents of the Ollersett, Diglands, Derby Road areas, and Low Leighton, up to Birch Vale (see map).

We work closely with local authorities and community or voluntary groups to ensure that the needs of people living in the area are being met.

We will act as a voice to represent issues of local concern, e.g. to the Town or Borough Council. We will try to make sure that funding and resources come in to the area when they are available, e.g. to improve safety or provide services.

Is it a Political thing?
No. The Association is not linked to any political party. We will work with all Parties to make sure that they understand the issues that concern people in the area.

Do you help tenants with housing issues?
No, we are not a tenants' or residents' association. We would put people in touch with the right organization, or help them to set up a tenants or residents group.

Who runs the Association?
At the meeting in April a number of people offered to help run the Association. We have a Secretary,

a Treasurer, a Publicity Officer and two people who Chair the organisation. We also have 5 other people who sit on the Committee and help organise events and activities. We are always looking for more people who are interested in helping the Association and the Committee.

In April every year the Association will hold an Annual General Meeting at which elections for officers and the committee will be held. Anyone who is a member can stand for election

Who can become members?
Membership is open to people living in the area covered by the Association (see map). People over 18 can become full members, those under 18 can become Junior Members. Membership is free. If you would like to become a member or to find out more contact details are below. The more members the Association has, the stronger it will be. All members must agree to support the aims of the Community Association.

How do you decide what to campaign about?
YOU TELL US! We listen to the problems and issues you raise with us and to your ideas for making things better. We then start campaigning and talking to the people who can make things happen. For example, if you tell us about problems with crime, we will take the matter to the police and local authority and we will make sure action is taken!
