Close, But No Cigar As Millers Exit Vase:
Cheadle Town 3 - New Mills 2
| Within
a minute of the kick off, New Mills applied good pressure
on Cheadle's goal forcing keeper Troy Whittle to push
the ball over for a corner kick. Matt Buckley swung in
an excellent ball to find Simon Ignotus storming
in, who headed into the gaping net to give the underdogs
a dream start.
Kieran Lugsden
was getting good service early on and sent a fine ball
through to Stacey Wild, who shot across goal but wide
of the mark.
The home
side were often on the back foot during the opening
twenty minutes but did break down the right wing forcing
Kelvin Lugsden to defend admirably. Cheadle handed the
ball into the net, the goal disallowed, a yellow card
resulted, while at the other end the Millers continued
to press for a second. Kieran Lugsden took the ball
on from outside the box, his instinctive left-footed
drive beat Whittle but was agonisingly close to the
wrong side of the upright.
After 41 minutes
of play, Cheadle equalised, a flowing move down the left
allowed Martin
|
|
McDonald to pick his
spot across the face of goal, this unnerved New Mills and the
home side soon gained the advantage with Rob Kemton firing home
just 3 minutes later.
Would New Mills
respond during the second half, not if McDonald or Jones for
Cheadle had anything to do with it. Mark Jones in particular
made the most of the freedom he was allowed down the left
wing to trouble the Millers throughout. Ben Candlin for New
Mills was forced to save smartly at his near post as Cheadle
applied the pressure while Millers sporadic counter-attacks
often broke down in the final third.
Cheadle extended
the lead on 65 minutes, Lee Morris twisted and turned inside
the box to plant a sweet shot into the top right, giving Candlin
no chance. David Bailey spared Millers blushes to block Town's
shot into the unguarded net and Danny Thomas was introduced
to offer fresh impetuous on the right wing. Thomas seemed
to have won the ball cleanly to present Ignotus with his hat
trick, but the referee had already blown as the Millers centre-half
fired home.

Millers
pile on pressure in closing minutes
Cheadle were reduced
to 10 men following a cynical foul on Lugsden and from this
point on the fight-back commenced. The Millers peppered Town's
goal with half-a-dozen corner kicks. Bailey had an effort
cleared off the line as Town stood firm, but the arrears were
reduced following the visitors constant pressure, good work
from Kelvin Lugsden allowed Simon Ignotus to volley
the ball past Whittle in the 89th minute of play.

Julian
Dowe flicks ball to Stephen Littler
New Mills had two
chances to snatch a draw during time added on, Julian Dowe
fired wide and Wes Gibbons had only been on the field for
moments, his chance was from the textbook, headed down with
power, but as it also was shy of the post it is Cheadle who
progress to the 1st round proper in the F.A. Vase.

Open Season For Bomber Blackburn: New
Mills Res 5 - Springhead A 1
.jpg) |
Adam Blackburn scored 4 for the home side, putting
Millers second string through to the next round of this
season's Open Trophy at a sunny Church Lane.
New Mills had won this competition two seasons ago
and signalled their intent from the kick off, Scott
Jones jinxing his way into the box to distribute a fine
cross in front of goal, the back of the net remained
intact, mainly due to lack of support from his team
mates who failed to capitalise from the left-back's
vision.
|
|
Ross Cooney in goal for Springhead smothered Blackburn's
drive from deep, the visitors keeper also saved an excellent
curling free kick from the inspirational Steve Worrall
who entertained the crowd throughout, but after the
visitors had forced Bob Crossland to head clear from
his line, Bomber Blackburn opened his account
with 21 minutes on the clock, the lively young striker
shook off his marker to fire the ball low and hard beyond
the reach of Ross Cooney in goal.
Within a minute, the advantage was doubled, Blackburn
appeared to be offside as he received the ball 30 yards
out, but no compassion was allowed as Cooney watched
helplessly as Blackburn calmly took the ball
around him to walk unchallenged into the gaping net.
Blackburn has been a phenomenon since his introduction
just 3 weeks ago, but it was debutante Kyle Brown who
excelled down the right flank to set up Blackburn for
his hat trick. Cooney must have felt a sense of daja
vous as Blackburn calmly rounded him again to
walk the ball home for his penultimate goal of the day.

The rampant striker scored
his 4th within a mesmeric fifteen minute spell,
chipping Cooney en route to goal, grateful
to an incisive pass from Kyle Brown (left)
on his impressive debut appearance. |

Jeremy Unsworth was keen to keep a clean sheet and made a good
block at his near post as half time approached, however Lee
Pownall latched onto a decent long ball, the bounce sat up nicely
for Springhead's striker, the finish was thunderous and gave
Unsworth little chance to realise his ambition.
.jpg) |
The second half went flat for long periods, the visitors
pressed hard to reduce the deficit, Millington, Brown
and Crossland were competent in their defensive duties
but Worrall's trickery on the left wing allowed him
to find Blackburn lurking at the far post, his header
was at full stretch, no problem for Cooney in goal.
New Mills completed the rout five minutes from time,
Worrall crossed to Blackburn who in turn laid the ball
off to Scott Moore, the manager had come off the subs
bench and sent a perfectly-weighted ball through to
Ben Hall (seen left), who showed immense
strength and determination in his quest for goal. Hall
took the ball along the by-line, nimbly cut outside
the six-yard box, the inside of his left boot was to
provide a classy strike from a midfielder of the highest
possible calibre.

Millers Prepared For F.A. Vase Derby Tie
New Mills AFC gained the perfect preparation for the forth
coming F.A. Vase tie at Cheadle Town with a resounding away
victory at indomitable Irlam. Stacey Wild opened
the scoring at Silver Street with Stephen Littler doubling
the advantage. The home side did peg a goal back but Kieran
Lugsden completed the scoring, an emphatic result against
one of the favoured title contenders in the Manchester League.
There is a sense of excitement and optimism as New Mills
AFC prepare for Saturday's trip to Cheadle Town in the second
qualifying round of the F.A. Vase. The Millers had a walkover
for the 1st round as Hatfield Main withdrew from the competition,
and should New Mills beat their local derby rivals from down
the A6 then New Mills will have made the 1st round proper
for the first time in Millers History.
Tony Rigby's side will be boosted from the fact that they
defeated Town 4-2 in a pre-season friendly, but the North
West Counties outfit will be hot favourites against the only
amateur team to compete from the North west region. Last season
saw the highest gate in the entire opening round of 257 at
Church Lane, so hopefully the Faithful will turn out in droves
to give Miller's the edge.
New Mills AFC are running special coaches from Church Lane
for this mouth-watering cup tie at 12:45 pm and at 1:45 pm
respectively. As there is no fixture at Church Lane on the
day, anyone wishing to attend are urged to contact the club
on 01663 747435 for further ticket information.
If the match is drawn, the replay will be at Church Lane on
Tuesday the 23rd with a 7:30 pm Kick Off.

Bogey Team Deny Home Win:
New Mills 1 - Dukinfield Town 1

almost gave the lead to New Mills, Matt Buckley crossed
into the box, defender Alan |

Boswell headed away, the ball grazing the post on
its way out for a corner kick.
Millers keeper Ben Candlin made a string of fine saves
throughout the match while at the other end Stephen
Littler's determination allowed Julian Dowe to curl
an effort at goal which sailed well over the bar.
|
|
Town's keeper Alistair Fisher was forced to make a
good save from Chris Lees ferocious drive, but excellent
defending from Kelvin Lugsden denied Dukinfield from
taking the lead midway through the half - the visitors
had broke down the left wing, a decent strike forced
Candlin to save, the ball fell invitingly to Daley Rothwell
who looked favourite to fire into the gaping net but
Lugsden heroically flung himself across goal at the
crucial moment to block on the line.
Ben Candlin continued to deter the visitors after the
break, making numerous double saves to repel the visitors
intent, while at the other end Chris Lees was supplying
many a fine cross, one which sailed over Fisher to find
Danny Thomas running in from deep, who struck while
in full flight, close, but not enough.
New Mills took the lead in the 65th minute, Chris Lees
took an excellent corner kick, the ball eventually fell
to Kieran Lugsden who despite having his back to
goal, turned smartly to shoot beyond Fisher's grasp to
the joy of the home crowd. |

Kieran Lugsden puts away Millers goal
The Millers striker had a chance of a second shortly after,
Lugsden used the outside of his boot to fire past Fisher but
the ball brushed the post the wrong side. The visitors equalised
5 minutes from time, Craig Smith had his back to goal outside
the 18 yard line, Smith kicked the ball over his head in fortues
fashion, the ball sailed over the packed defence and dropped
into the net to give Miller's bogey team a share of the points.

Millers: Candlin, Land, Ignotus, Pickering, Lugsden
