Millers Second String Out Of Derbyshire Divisional
Cup
New Mills Res 2 - Glossop NE Res 4
Despite heavy rainfall overnight, a break in the weather
encouraged a reasonably-sized crowd to witness this 3rd round
Derbyshire Divisional cup tie between the reserve sides of
New Mills and near neighbours Glossop North End.
|
Good early pressure from the home side almost paid
off when Stephen Done tried to curl the ball around
Mike Barrat in North End's goal, the ball beat Barrat
but missed the intended target.
Ben Hall picked up a loose ball and sent a short pass
through to Adam Blackburn who burst through to strike,
good defensive cover denied his opportunity on that
occasion. Ian Mattimore too tried to swing the ball
into goal from afar, but his effort also curled wide.
Glossop started to show their intent with a decent
cross forcing Andy Tester in Miller's goal to grasp
the ball when danger loomed.
|
|
But after 23 minutes of play New Mills took the lead, Ian Mattimore
won a midfield tussle and headed the ball on to Adam Blackburn
who showed a touch of class, lifting the ball over Barrat's
legs as the Glossop keeper advanced out of his goal.

Blackburn challenges in the air
|
North End were well and truly on the back
foot as Mattimore crosssed with acuracy to pick out
Blackburn inside the box, Miller's top scorer headed
firmly but over the crossbar as the screws were being
turned.
As half time approached Stephen Done released Blackburn
who bore down on goal again, Blackburn shrugged off
his marker and drilled the ball with pace across the
greasy surface, Barrat got down smartly to deflect the
shot, the ball skimmed half a yard wide of Glossop's
upright.
Although the home side had the better chances throughout
the opening period, Glossop not only equalised with
a 47th minute header, but took the lead 3 minutes after
the break when Rick Bell was allowed to shoot from outside
the box, the New Mills defence not closing down quick
enough.
The home side almost scored moments later, Mattimore's
drive was well parried by Barrat but Jason Clarke was
unable to turn in the rebound. Glossop began to defend
more stoutly and get their passing game going to force
Miller's back line to up their work rate.
New Mills regained parity in the 65th minute, Stephen
Done swung a decent corner kick into the box, the initial
header by Howard Swarrey forced a clearance off the
line but

as the ball spun skywards Stephen Bates jumped the highest
to nod the ball into Glossop's net. However, the visitors were
not to be denied scoring twice in the final 15, Lee Blackshawe
fired into the empty net as Miller's keeper was out of position
and Chris Davies converted a penalty to complete the tie.
Millers: Tester, Brown, Brankin, Bates, Stansfield,
Swarrey, Hall, Clarke, Done, Mattimore, Blackburn.
Subs: Prodromis, Adam, Millington.

The Reserves face Dukinfield Town this coming Saturday with
a 2:30 pm Kick Off, if New Mills Reserves are to mount a serious
challenge to winning their respective league, then maximum
points against a very strong side is an absolute must.
====================
New Mills 1st Team travelled to Bury where they faced
Elton Vale, The Millers ran out 5-2 winners, Kieran Lugsden
scored twice, Chris Lees, Billy Craven and Stacey Wild also
finding the back of Vale's net too inviting to pass up on.

Millers Shine Bright As The Sun Sets On
Town:
New Mills Res 3 - Atherton Town Res 1
A spectacular sunset engulfed Church Lane as New Mills
Reserves laid siege to Atherton's goal, the Lancashire side
had arrived with a conflicting kit to the Amber of New Mills,
Miller's 4th choice shirt solved the problem for Atherton
but the second half performance from Scott Moore's troops
proved more than problematic for the visitors.
.jpg)
Early action
Stephen Done had Millers first chance with 5 minutes gone
but his drive from distance was well covered by Gary Osbourne
in Atherton's goal. The visitors keeper was called upon again
when Adam Blackburn created a good chance to shoot, but Osbourne
looked comfortable as New Mills pressed. Kyle Brown too made
a determined run from deep but nothing seemed to trouble Osbourne
who smothered well.
|
Atherton had a glorious chance as half time approached,
Craig Redshaw broke free and shot early but Andy Tester
in Miller's goal saved smartly to ensured the tie remained
deadlocked.
Ten Minutes after the break New Mills produced the
best move of the match, Stephen Bates broke down an
Atherton attack and sprayed the over ball to Kyle Brown
in the right back position, Brown sent the ball into
the path of Jason Clarke who sped up the line, a short
ball to Blackburn gave the Miller's striker a good chance
to shoot but in unselfish fashion, Blackburn picked
out Stephen Done who readjusted his stance to
fire the ball home left footed. A delightful move that
stunned the visitors and brought rapturous applause
from the Miller's faithful.

Adam Blackburn doubled the advantage moments
later, his 21st goal of the season came as he broke
free from midfield to casually side-step past Osbourne
and side-foot home with convincing poise.
The visitors almost grabbed a goal back with an effort
just shy of the post but for the remainder of the game,
the traffic was all one direction.
Jason Clarke showed a good burst of speed to take the
ball down the wing, a pinpoint cross was desired and
a good delivery found Blackburn at the far post
who rose majestically through the red sky to head home
with power and precision.
A hat-trick was on the cards just moments
|
later, but although Blackburn's 30-yarder screamed past Osbourne,
the ball was always rising and rose inches above the crossbar
as Osbourne looked on.
Kyle Brown and Stephen Bates had excelled in defence but
it was the work ethic of Ben Hall that pleased the eye the
most. His fine contribution was almost rewarded with a stunning
low drive, but the outstretched foot of Town's keeper denied
Miller's midfield dynamo.
|
New Mills finishing the game strongly but Town forced
a late scare when a shot from distance dipped onto Miller's
crossbar and into the grateful arms of Tester in goal,
the ball was sent straight back up the field where Clarke
fired across the face of goal, the ball brushed the
post to the relief of the Lancashire outfit.
Millers: Tester, Brown, Brankin, Bates, Stansfield,
Clarke, Hall, Swarrey, Prodromis, Done, Blackburn
2. Sub: Warhurst

The Derbyshire Divisional Cup returns to Church Lane on Saturday
when Miller's second string entertain the Reserve side of
Glossop North End, Kick Off is at 2:30 pm and it should be
a cracker.
The 1st Team made it a double victory of Atherton with a 3-1
victory at Howe Bridge, Stephen Littler, Chris Lees and David
Bailey put the Millers in command before Towns late consolation.

Millers Denied by Another Late Strike:
New Mills 0 - Wilmslow Albion 1
|
For the second week in succession New Mills were
denied their just reward to another late, late goal.
Billy Craven had Millers first chance just 5 minutes
in, Pete Tristram was all that stood between him and
Wilmslow's goal, but although his shot curled around
the opposing keeper, the ball rebounded off the post
to the visitors relief.
Stacey Wild earned the home side a corner kick with
an inspired run, Matt Buckley picked out Craven at the
far post who headed back across goal to find Chris Lees
who turned smartly to volley, but his effort spun skywards
to safety, a firmer connection would surely have given
New Mills the lead.
|
|
.jpg)
Chris Lee's volley spun over the crossbar
Ben Candlin was forced to tip over a fine effort
from Andy Fairclough who also showed a classy touch with a
full volley as half time approached. Matt Buckley too tried
his luck from 40 yards but parity was to be maintained as
the half time whistle blew. The second half flowed from end
to end. Ian Mattimore worked tirelessly on his 1st Team debut.
Kelvin Lugsden floated a decent cross over Tristram who made
up good ground to save as the ball looked destined to drop
in. Candlin and Tristram looked dominant in between the sticks,
Tristram picked all the high balls up with ease while Candlin
held the ball firmly from Wilmslow's countless low strikes.
|
Millers best chance came just past the hour mark, a
determined run from Stephen Littler allowed a decent
cross into the box. Wilmslow failed to deal, passing
the ball to Stacey Wild's feet, Wilde drilled the ball
with power and precision but Tristram smothered smartly
to deny. Craven had a second chance moments later following
good work from Wild on the wing, the ball cut back into
Craven's path who side-footed past the keeper, but the
ball deflected off a defender and out to safety.
Wilmslow also had good chances in front of goal, Danny
Jackson had replaced the injured Stephen Land and made
a crucial block as Wilmslow threatened. Wes Gibbons
also had come from the subs bench and a deft touch from
him put Mattimore through, under immense pressure Mattimore
took the ball wide of the advancing keeper, his half-chance
was creative as he wrapped his foot around the ball
at full stretch, but agonisingly wide of Wilmslow's
upright.
|
|
New Mills had played well enough to have won this fixture
or to have at least earned a draw for their manager, but typical
of Tony Rigby's maiden season at Church Lane, the writing
was on the wall. With barely a minute to play, Dean Martin's
strike from the edge of the box flew through a packed defence
to find the corner of the net.
Millers: Candlin, Land, Ignotus, Lugsden KL, Pickering, Lees,
Buckley, Littler, Wilde, Craven, Mattimore. Subs: Jackson,
Gibbons
============================
On a brighter note, Kelvin and Kieran Lugsden have been selected
to play for Altrincham's senior Team in the Unibond Cup. While
Kyle Brown and Adam Blackburn have been invited for football
trials at second division Wrexham.
The Reserve team were unbeaten in their last eight outings but
fell by 3 goals to 2 at Stockport Georgians, Jason Clark and
Adam Blackburn on song for Millers second string who will entertain
Atherton Town this coming Saturday with a 2:30pm Kick Off and
all spectators are welcome.

Millers Denied by Late, Late Goal:
New Mills Res 1 - Springhead Res 1
A blustery cold snap descended upon the Church Lane
ground for this Manchester League fixture following
many, many weeks of mild autumnal weather. The visitors
proved to be a tough nut to crack. Howard Swarrey had
the first chance for
|
|
New Mills when his controlled volley zipped past the upright
10 minutes in, while at the other end Bob Crossland was forced
to block bravely when the Oldham side looked destined to score.
.jpg)
Early pressure from Howard Swarrey
|
New Mills took the lead just past the half hour mark,
Adam Blackburn reacted first when a pass from
deep dropped half way between Dave Cullington in goal
and Springhead's back line, Blackburn simply outpaced
the opposing centre half, took a neat touch past the
keeper and drove the ball into the gaping net.
Bailey, Brown and Bates were forced to work hard to
keep Springhead's lively forwards at bay, Mickey Brankin
(seen right) was also kept busy but did manage
to get forward often to supply many a fine cross from
his trusty left boot. New Mills were not the only team
to defend well as Springhead repelled constantly.
|
|
Although the visitors finished the half strongly it was Blackburn
who had the best chance to increase the home sides advantage,
but Cullington smothered the ball well as Miller's top scorer
was poised to strike.
.jpg) |
A champagne moment for Miller's Stephen Done as the
home side's best move of the match was instigated -
with his back to goal and a defender breathing down
his neck, Doney flicked the ball past his man using
his back heel and set off towards goal. Although the
cross intended for Blackburn was a whisker too high,
Chris Prodromis retrieved the ball and crossed back
into the danger zone. Stephen Done had made up good
ground to strike and the keeper seemed beaten, but the
shot hit the last man on the line, the ball out to safety,
the visitors off the hook.
Chris Prodromis (seen left) caused a lot of
trouble with his forays into the box but the support
needed from the home side was often lacking. Ian
|
Mattimore and Ben Hall were introduced to beef up the midfield.
Springhead continued to pose a threat but were reduced to 10
men for dissent. Prodromis seemed to jar his knee and was forced
to leave the field, Jason Warhurst the last sub available. Kyle
Brown had worked tirelessly throughout but also limped from
the pitch, the balance swinging back in Springhead's favour
as no replacement could take to the field.
New Mills had lead for almost an hour but the visitors floated
in a cross in the 87th minute, the ball dropping into the
net to earn a fair share of the points.
Millers: Unsworth, Brown, Crossland, Bates, Brankin, Clarke,
Bailey, Swarrey, Prodromis, Done, Blackburn. Subs:
Mattimore, Hall, Warhurst.

The 1st Team also conceded a late goal at Dukinfield
Town in their 2-2 draw at the Blocksages Ground, Stephen
Littler bagging both goals for New Mills.
This coming Saturday the 1st Team entertain Wilmslow
Albion with a 2:30 pm kick off, and all are welcome.
New Mills Reserves have been handed a plum home tie
against Glossop NE Reserves in the Derbyshire Divisional
Cup 3rd Round which will be played on the 29th of November,
this fixture will take precedence over the 1st Teams
home fixture as previously advertised.

Cup Tie Roundup: New
Mills Reserves through unopposed
Saturday's Divisional Cup tie at Church Lane had to be called
off at short notice as Cresswell Parish were unable to field
a team. New Mills Reserves had already been awarded a
bye in the 1st round, and without kicking a ball in this county
competition now progress to the third round draw.
As New Mills AFC had played their Senior Cup Tie at
Holbrook M.W. midweek, no fixture took place at Church Lane
whatsoever. In that tie New Mills lost direction early on
conceding a couple of soft goals and Holbrook finished the
1st half with two tremendous goals giving the home side a
commanding lead.
The Millers fought back well after the break, Simon Ignotus
and Wes Gibbons reduced the arrears but the opening
10 minutes were to prove too costly.
|
The Millers
Media Group
decided that
the County Cup
tie between
Chapel Town
and Blackwell
was the next
best available option. A crowd of just under 50
witnessed a goal-less 1st half. Ex-Millers man
Paul Edgehill did find the net on thirty five
minutes, but his classy strike was ruled out for
an off side decision.
Lee Harrison opened the scoring
for Chapel shortly after the break and a brave
header from Adam Ormerod soon doubled the advantage
for the Hope Valley Side. Former New Mills Youth
star Craig Hall was proving a handful for Blackwell's
back line, his jinxing run into the box forced
his marker to pull Hall to the ground, Blackwell
reduced to ten. Man of the match Simon Garner
dispatched the penalty kick in efficient manner.
Nimble footwork from Craig Hall
on the wing opened up the visitors defence for
the last time, Substitute Peter Compton side-stepped
smartly and picked his spot to complete the rout.
Buxton Reserves, Dove Holes, Tideswell
and Gamesley all won their County Cup Ties and
also progress to the 3rd round draw. The second
strings of Whaley Bridge and Chapel progress in
the Derbyshire Junior Cup. Buxworth, however,
fell by 6 goals to 1 at home to Holmsfield.

winter months approach, anyone travelling from outside the
area are urged to contact the club before departure on 01663
