Tale of Two Halves: New Mills 2
- Leigh Athletic 2
New
Mills once again pressed the self destruct button on Saturday
when they threw away a two goal lead over promotion rivals
Leigh Athletic.
On
a lovely afternoon a crowd approaching 150 witnessed another
fine first-half performance with the Millers well on top
and out to avenge last seasons home defeat. Chris Lees
broke the deadlock in senstional style with a fine individual
effort. Picking the ball up just inside the visitors half
he went on a mazy run going past five players before slotting
the ball past keeper Doonan.

for the Millers first goal against Leigh Athletic
With
half time rapidly approaching Dean Morgan scored
the Millers second, which their dominance had deserved
when he superbly chipped the keeper from 25 yards.
Leigh kicked off the second half and straight away it
was a case of "de ja vue" for the Millers followers.
The Millers did not bring their first half performance
out of the dressing room, and it was no surprise when
Rick Wilson reduced the arrears midway through
the second half. With tension amongst the crowd rising
and time running out Leigh grabbed the equaliser when
a defensive lapse allowed Bevan to fire in off
the post.
Although
throwing away two points, the Millers stay in contention,
but where would the team be if we could just keep it going
for 90 minutes?

another attack from Dave Clarke

A
Dean Morgan strike fifteen minutes from time was enough
to give the Millers a hard earned three points and the
double over Prestwich Heys.
New Mills fought well throughout the game with the battling
Dave Clarke going close on a couple of occasions, and
Simon Ignotus having a header cleared off the line, all
before half time.
Heys tested the Millers defence on several occasions,
but to no avail. An excellent result which keeps the Millers
up amongst the leaders.

Hero - Holders go Through: New Mills 1 - Chapel
Town 1
Derbyshire
Divisional Cup holders New Mills moved into the next round
after edging out local rivals Chapel Town on penalties.
The game that was surely the tie of the round, flowed
from end to end and as a cracking cup tie. With chances
at both ends, Chapel took the lead when Oliver France
waiting at the far post fired in. New Mills responded
and were unlucky not to level when Rick Jones's header
was cleared off the line. In their best spell the Millers
kept up the pressure and Stephen Littler fired against
the post, but the visitors went in ahead at the break.
Chapel
started the brighter in the second half, and missed a
number of chances, the beat falling to goalscorer Oliver
France. However, it was the Millers who eventually scored
when Williamson turned the ball into his own net.
Both
teams had chances, but the tie moved into extra time and
with still no further breakthrough penalties. After five
penalties each, and the score at 3-3 it was down to sudden
death. Both teams scored and then Rick Pite fired
the Millers ahead. Then keeper Barry Eaton saved
Ben Candlin kick and the game was over.
