ALBERT
BOOTH
This
year the Finnair Manchester League lost Honorary Life President
Albert Booth, who passed away aged 81.
Albert
was born and bred in Moston, and by fifteen years of age he
had formed a football team called Ashleigh. Known as Buzzer
Booth, Albert was a handy centre-forward before serving in
the RAF during the Second WorldWar,
marrying Ivy in December 1941.
On leaving
the services, Albert rejoined Ashleigh, then playing in the
Manchester Amateur League, before hanging up his boots in
the early 1950s. He then formed a junior club called Broadhurst
Lads, a team which produced, amongst others, Brian Kidd and
Stan Bowles. Typical of the man, Albert was to be seen marking
the pitch, preparing the kit and making sure
everything was in order before all home matches.
Albert
later began his long association with the Manchester League
in the mid 1950s when he took over as League Secretary from
Tom Gilgryst, laterbecoming
League President.Serving
during times of great change for amateur football, Albert
guided the Manchester League through the lean years of the
1970s, when many of the area's more successful clubs were
moving onto senior leagues, with few fresh faces to replace
them. Largely due to Albert's hard work and acumen, the Manchester
League pulled through, and has built on this platform to remain
a
strong and vibrant competition.
His principles
and single minded commitment to amateur football earned him
the respect of all who knew him, helping many, many clubs
through difficult times, and his passing sees football in
Manchester lose one its most dedicated servants.
Albert
leaves his wife Ivy, and son David. A service will be held
at St Marys Church, Moston on Monday 8th April at (TBA). Flowers
are welcome, and any donations should be made to the British
Heart Foundation.
League
President Phil Morris adds :"In
over sixteen years of working alongside Albert, he has been
a pleasure to work with, his dedication has been an inspiration
to all officials who have the honorary task of administering
amateur and non-league football.
Albert
was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word, whose one
passion for the last forty years was the Manchester Football
League. I
can remember when ill discipline was a problem in the Manchester
League, and Albert pioneered the clean up campaign with player
registrations
being withdrawn for acts of violence which were littering
our game. It
is to Albert's credit that the Manchester League is now one
of the most organised and well disciplined within the Greater
Manchester area."
There
will be a minutes silence at all Finnair Manchester League
fixtures on Saturday to allow everyone associated with the
competition to pay their respects.
