Remembrance Service I was very moved during the service and also outside at the cenotaph seeing most of the local services presenting poppy wreaths. I was, however, very dissapointed in NOT seeing the local Fire Fighting Service present. I have attended this service year after year and probably seen them in presence about once or twice! I really think this is a VERY poor do! It's amazing how they seem to turn out for carnival etc, but not for the Remembrance Service. I just wondered if anybody could shine any light on this? The Fire Brigade had a lot of envolvement during the wars and I'm sure the community of New Mills would appreciate seeing the members of the town's Fire Service Present at more of the civic ceremonies held in the town. There was a Wreath taken to New Mills Fire Station by a Councillor every year up until about 2 years ago and for 2 years on the run it was not paid for by the men at New Mills and was not taken to the Cenotaph to be placed. So fair enough to the Councillor who probably thought it was not worth wasting their time anymore. Yet you will see them struting their stuff on Carnival day! They always manage to turn out for things like that. I was also at this service on 11th November and it was really nice to see all the services represented - and long should it continue. It was an embarrasment to you I'm afraid lads.
The Fire Crew was probably not available - As per usual.

NEW SHOPS IN NEW MILLS -
JUST A QUICK MESSAGE TO LET ALL THE PEOPLE OF NEW MILLS KNOW OF THE NEW SHOPS IN THE INDOOR MARKET !
New Mills Primary School have made music their priority for the forthcoming term - this sounds like a most refreshing change - with different types of music being featured during the period. Tomorrow (11th October) sees the start of this enterprise when at 1.30pm the Tideswell Male Voice Choir are to sing to the entire school. This is to be a jolly occasion and it is hoped that the event will enhance the children's enjoyment and interest in singing. Over recent years, Male Voice Choirs in general have had difficulty in recruiting new members (particularly younger members)and this is a trend which the Tideswell Male Voice Choir in particular are determined to reverse. Being part of a choir is a wonderful thing - not only is singing in harmony with others a most exquisite thing to do - often your hair stands on end with the beauty of the chords - it is fun, is very social - and is actually good for you. Few things in life can be better! The choir want to get this message across and hope that the children will grow to appreciate this wonderful world of singing and music in general.
Please can anyone help me with the name of a company, possibly in the New Mills area - I have been told that it is something like A F Methological Resources Ltd - any ideas please? Fae

Hi. Haven't visited the New Mills message board for ages Just noted your enquiry re Manchester & County Bank, subsequently District Bank. I used to work for District Bank and finished up at Hayfield branch in 1954 when at age 21 I emigrated to New Zealand. Although I lived in New Mills I never worked at District Bank there as staff (perhaps with the exception of the Manager) were not allowed to work at the branch where they lived. I know my father banked with the District, New Mills, and I think the Manager's name then (early 1950s) was Brocklehurst. District eventually became part of NatWest Bank and I did obtain my staff records from their archives. However in 2000 NatWest became part of the Royal Bank of Scotland group who seem to have acquired the archives. You could try www.rbs.com and see whether they could assist you with old photos etc. Did NatWest close the High St premises when District went out of existence? I'm interested to hear it's now a residence. Keith Hamilton (1 Dec 06)

I am trying to get in contact with anybody who may be related to or who knew my great grandmother, Fanny Draper. Fanny lived in New Mills from 1901. She lived in Meal Street and at 33 Brook Side. In 1920 she gave birth to a daughter, Annie, who was my grandmother. We believe they may have spent some time in a workhouse, possibly at Hayfield. Annie was adopted by Matilda Trotter in 1935 but in what circumstances we're not sure. In January 1928 Fanny married Edwin Wood and gave birth to another daughter, Frances Marjorie Wood on 30th March 1928 in Hazel Grove. They were then living in Bramhall Moor Lane. Frances would be 78 now and it is her we would love to contact. Can anybody tell me if they are getting speeds over 2 meg ( up to 8 meg). It is extremely difficult to establish what speed is possible at our local telephone exchange. All Internet providers claim to supply speeds up yo 8 meg. However this depends on whether BT or the ISP have upgraded the local exchange or not. There is no point to move to another ISP who is promosing to provide 8 meg, and discover that the local exchange has not been upgraded! So if anybody out there is receiving 8 meg connection please let me know. Sam- New Mills - reply via newmillsweb.com See - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange.php?ecode=MRNEW

Greta Lindsay - Have just "discovered" your website - and was really pleased to read the various messages from folk around the world. I was born in New Mills in 1940 (Greta Lomas - lived on New Street) and attended St George's Church School and then the Grammar School. In 1962 I left New Mills to take employment with P & O Lines on their ships and travelled with them for 10 years. I then came to Australia to live in a beautiful place called Coffs Harbour (north coast of New South Wales) - training home of our (not-doing-so-good) Wallabies rugby team). I have received numerous visitors from New Mills over the years - the Crichlow families, Frank Bullough, Bert Gladwin and just recently David and Kath Washbrook had dinner with us -it is so nice to "catch up" after all these years. My sister Betty left New Mills for South Africa but sadly we lost her several years ago. I still have my older sister Joan Derbyshire who lives in Jubilee Street. I occasionally visit New Mills but not many of my "old" friends are still there. If any of my friends read this I would love to hear from you. Also if anyone has any idea of where I might get my hands on a book that our teacher in standard 3 (Mrs Waterhouse) at St George's School used to read to us every Friday - Golden Country Beyond The Sea - I would dearly love to read this to my granddaughter but have not been able to source the book here. It is a single note, a loud and plaintive call that lasts a second or
two (a bird?), it repeats every six seconds and for long periods. Does
anyone know what the source of this annoyance is? As warmer weather
approaches I would like to be able to leave a window open and try to
get some sleep!! - Many thanks, John Rae (27-03-04)

Hi,
my name is Keith Hamilton and I lived in New Mills prior to emigrating
to New Zealand in 1954. At that time my father G.C.Hamilton was Chief
Financial Officer of the New Mills Urban District Council and I worked
for the District Bank. I have been fortunate to have revisited New Mills
a couple of times since then, most recently last August very briefly.
I was delighted to see the town much as I remembered it and in good
heart. I was particularly impressed with the development of the Torrs
and the Millennium Walkway. I believe many of my former school and family
friends have passed away. I have only just discovered the town website
which is great - it must rank as one of the best of its kind for presentation
and content. keitham@xtra.co.nz

Hi there,
I was browsing through the Message Boards and notice alot of messages
from people trying to find each other. I found this very interesting
and wondered where some of the people were now that I was at school
with. I was at NEW MILLS SECONDARY SCHOOL between 1979-1984. Before
that I attended ST. GEORGES PRIMARY SCHOOL.
Hi
Everyone back in New Mills,You won't have seen us for a while because we are teaching English in the northeast of China in the city of Shenyang (pop. 6 million). We would like to know if there are any schools, organisations or individuals in New Mills who would like penfriends with Chinese students. The students in our university are aged between 17 and 24 and in the middle school, they are aged 12 to 18 and are very keen to establish links with English speaking people. You can use either email or good old fashioned letter writing to correspond with them. If you would like any more information please contact us at the email address below or contact Dan Wiltshire, (give him a hug from both of us if you see him!). Thanks, Shane & Babs Wiltshire - (3-11-02)

Hi everyone, My name's Astrid Wallace and me and my family used to
live in 24 Parkland Avenue before we moved to Germany - that was about
30+ years ago, and we have completely lost touch with my parent's acquaintances
and friends.
I was just
wondering if anyone had any information on the graveyards in New Mills
and the surrounding areas. I need this information for an art project
at school. Thanks. Lauren

Hi everyone,
My grandmother
Mary Ann Collins lived at the far end of Lark Hill Terrace until her
death in the mid 1950s. Does anyone know how I can find out anything
about her. I live in NWScotland and am unable to come down myself to
gain access to the New Mills Library records. I didn`t
get very far with info on Mary Ann Collins but perhaps someone will
know some of the Wilson family from New Mills. George Frederick Wilson
married Maggie Whittaker from New Mills in 1906 (Maggie's father was
a photographer). They were married at St. George's Parish Church in
New Mills on the 28th July. They had at least one son Ernest
Wilson, born 1907. Does this ring anybells?

Greetings New Millonians! Allow us to introduce ourselves. We are Ian and Kerry, and we came to visit your town during April/May 2001 with the aim of checking the place out as a potential location to live. We both currently work in Manchester City Centre, so we are looking for honest opinions from any fellow commuters who use the train service from either of your stations. Are they reliable? How much is the average weekly cost? In this harsh weather, do you commuters suffer delays through the 'wrong type of snow'? Also I must say we were gutted to read about the Mill fire, which leads me to ask for honest opinions on the general state of law and order in the town. I know nowhere is safe these days, but having spent the last few years in Withington I could do with a break from general loutish behaviour on my doorstep! Looking forward
to any responses - iankerry@btopenworld.com

MEP CHRIS DAVIES TO BE ARRESTED? A North West Euro-MP is planning to seek arrest for possession of cannabis in a protest aimed at supporting the imprisoned owner of Britain's first Dutch-style 'coffee shop'. Chris Davies (07787 504516), the Liberal Democrat MEP for the North West, will seek on Saturday 15 December at 10.00am to be arrested by Greater Manchester Police for possession of a tiny amount of cannabis resin on a postage stamp. This is likely to take place at the police station, Lee Street, Stockport. He
wants to draw attention to the experience of his constituent, Mr Colin
Davies (no relation), founder of the 'Dutch Experience' coffee shop
in Stockport. Colin Davies, who admits to helping people with medical
problems obtain the drug to relieve pain, is currently in Strangeways
prison on remand while awaiting trial on cannabis-related offences.
He has been repeatedly denied bail despite never having being convicted
of a drugs-related offence. - Shaun Tinslay (12-12-01).

Hi
there
I live in NM & have been running, mainly for fun, around the area and noticed quite a number of other runners out and about. As there is no local road/trail running club I thought it may be a good idea to try and make some contacts and see if there are other people who might want to join together for the odd run or maybe form a local running club.
