AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS
Getmapping.com
is the web implementation of the The Millennium Map, which will
allows everyone easy access to a seamless bird's eye view of the
UK. These images are now accessible via multimap.com
.
From April 1999 and throughout the remainder of that year, when
light and weather allowed, four specially equipped aircraft flew
the length and breadth of England at 180 knots systematically photographing
90% of the country from an average height of 5,500ft and recording
every object below, down to a minimum size of 25cm.
To create the digital image of the Millennium Map that you can now
view on the Internet required considerable computer processing of
over 60,000 individual photographs. This allowed adjustment for
variations in terrain, camera optical effects, ground control points,
colour-balancing and edge-matching.
The images captured are so detailed that once digitised it is possible
to view the smallest feature of contemporary English life - from
crowds bustling along Oxford Street, to holiday makers relaxing
on the beach in Brighton.
However,
unfortunately only 'reduced clarity' images are available off the
net - nevertheless they have sufficient resolution to distinguish
individual houses.
