Town
Council Services
The
Town Council, which has twelve members, looks after the parks and
open spaces in the town, including the Torrs Riverside Park. The
Council is responsible for New Mills Heritage and Information Centre
and maintains Sett
Valley House and the town's scheme for the welfare of the
elderly. It also continues to support the twinning link with Alsfeld
in Germany which began in 1962.
The
Town Council works closely with the County and Borough Councils,
particularly regarding the Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme
(HERS) which looks to preserve and improve buildings within the
largest Conservation Area covering the town centre.
The
Town Hall, in addition to housing the town Council's Offices and
Council Chamber, is used by other public services including the
Registrar and Citizen's Advice Bureau. The Town Council added to
the attractions of the Town Hall in 1997 when access to the main
hall was made easier by the building of a level entrance from the
rear of the building. With parking and other facilities for wheel
chair users, the largest hall in the town can now be used by the
whole community. All meetings of the Council are open to members
of the public (unless specified as a "closed meeting")
and residents are encouraged to attend. Details of times/dates etc.
from the town Clerk.
High
Lee Hall and Park was purchased by New Mills in 1937 and is a beautiful
recreation area with gardens, woodland and a recently expanded children's
playground and paddling pool. Football pitches are provided at Newtown
and Bakehurst recreation grounds and there are other playing fields
and open spaces throughout the area, many with children's playground
equipment - at Birch Vale, Newtown, Watburn Road, Bowden Crescent,
Diglands, Thornsett, Whitle Road, 0llersett Avenue, Alsfeld Way,
Rowarth, Hague Bar and Bakehurst Estate.
