Since starting as a full time artist in 1983, Rosemary has established a reputation for paintings that reflect her love of the Peak District landscape. Her detailed watercolour paintings include views of typical villages, towns and scenery of both the Dark Peak and White Peak. She particularly enjoys painting scenes that characterise the styles and traditions of the area, especially those buildings that reflect the older industrial landscape.

Her work has won recognition at the Derbyshire Open Exhibition, including the Francis Lowe Trophy in 1991 and the Watercolour Prize in 1994. Rosemary's paintings are found in many collections, both public and private. Many have gone abroad to countries as diverse as New Zealand, Australia, Denmark and Canada. Her work has also been reproduced as calendars, greetings cards and illustrations.

Rosemary has lived in Disley since 1979, with her two sons and a very old Labrador dog, all of who accompany her on tours of the Peak District in search of new material for paintings.

Note from web editor: These watercolour paintings by Rosemary Powell are exacted with such finesse and delicacy that it is difficult to do them full justice here. The paintings have been carefully photographed by Mike Powell, printed, scanned, colour-adjusted and optimised for web display. This processing is bound to take a toll on the image quality, but I hope you will still gain an appreciation of the beauty of this work.

So precise is their detail and handling of light that on first seeing some of the photographic prints I mistook them as camera shots. Others to whom I have shown these photos have been absorbed in identifying the local scenes, but were awestruck to then be told 'You do realise these are taken from paintings!'

Typically a single Rosemary Powell watercolour takes three weeks to create. I hope you will take some time to look through the images on these pages, which it has been a pleasure and privilege to put together.
