LANTERN MAKING TRAINING - Sett Valley House, Sett Close.
Sunday 4 10am - 4pm
Full training will be given in how to make lanterns. This event is free but we would expect you to come and share your expertise at a minimum of three Lantern Workshops.
LANTERN WORKSHOPS
Thur 8, 7-9pm; Sat 10, 10-12noon and 2-4pm; Sun 11, 10-12noon and 2-4pm; Thur15, 7-9pm; Sat 17, 10-12noon and 2-4pm; Sun18, 10-12noon and 2-4pm
Make your own lantern for the famous Lantern Procession. A team of trained helpers is on hand to guide you. A minimum of two sessions will be needed to complete a lantern. All are welcome. Children please bring an adult with you. Each session costs £1 per person, refreshments available.

FIRE WORKSHOPS
Sat 10 at Liberal Hall, 10am - 4pm; Sun 11 at Longlands Road Youth Club - 10am - 4pm; Sat 17 at Liberal Hall, 10am - 4pm; Sun 18 at Liberal Hall, 10am - 4pm.
Come along and make the fire sculptures that form part of the lantern procession. Free.

Fri 9 7.30pm Quiz Night at New Mills Town Hall, in aid of New Mills and District Volunteer Centre. Licensed bar. £2 per person. Phone 01663 744196 to book.
Sat 10 2pm Wildlife Walk at Mouseley Bottom - meet at the car park at Hague Bar.
Enjoy the delights of our local environment with a guided walk through Mouseley Bottom led by John Hawksford. Appropriate clothing and footwear recommended. Free
Sat 10 10am-7pm Arts and Crafts Exhibition at St George’s Church, An exhibition of work by local artists. Free, donations welcome.
Sat 10 7.30pm A Tribute to ‘Elvis on Tour’ at New Mills Art Theatre, Jodrell Street.

Sat 10 7.30pm Culcheth Military Band at St George’s Church,
An evening of military band music - from marches to musicals. Tickets £4/3 from Bookstop, Market Street.
Sun 11 11am Festival Sports Day at New Mills Sports Ground, Church Road.
New Mills Bowls, Cricket and Tennis Club host a Festival Sports Day. Tennis coaching and competition begins at 11am. Cricket match stumps pitched at 1pm. Spectators welcome. Refreshments available. Free.
Sun 11 2-6pm Pantomime Horse Show at Bakehurst Playing Field (off New Street),
Ascot comes to New Mills. Competitions - best outfit, best Ascot hat etc. All profits to Oxfam. Admission £2/£1 from Bookstop or Oxfam, or at the gate.
Sun 11 4pm Walking Treasure Hunt and Barbecue. Meet at the Royal Oak car park, 50p per person, excluding refreshments. Phone 01663 745063 for details.

Test your memory and brain power with one of the well-known quizzes. Teams of up to six people welcome. Entry £2 per person, includes refreshments. Raffle. Proceeds to this year’s Community Bonfire.

Join members of New Mills Book Chat for laughter and a glass of wine. Bring along one of your favourite humorous books to share with the group, or just come along to listen and have a laugh. Free

Local home-grown DJs playing funky house and classic tunes all night long. Strictly over 18s. Free.

Featuring star billing comic ‘Mrs Barbara Nice’, ‘Holy Mary’ from Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights who starred with him in Coronation Street. Tickets £7, from Chalkers.
Sat17 10.30am The Famous Exploding Custard Show at New Mills Town Hall.
A fast-moving, entertaining demonstration of do-it-yourself kitchen table science by Ian Russell. Suitable for all ages. Tickets £3/2 from Bookstop, Market Street or on the door (under 8s must be accompanied by an adult).

Look around the garden and enjoy afternoon tea. Entry £1 per person
Sat 17 7.30pm ‘Let the People Sing’ Review at New Mills Art Theatre, Jodrell Street.

Mon 19 7.30pm The Bridges of New Mills at New Mills Town Hall.
A local history talk by Dr Derek Brumhead. With two river floodplains, a gorge, three railways, a canal and several turnpike and pre-turnpike roads and tracks, New Mills has a rich variety of bridges, (all of which make their own particular
contribution to some aspect of local history). This illustrated talk will describe over thirty of these bridges. Come early to ensure a seat! Free.
Fair Trade cheese and wine provided by New Mills Town Council.
Tue 20 5pm Children’s Film Show at St George’s School, Church Lane.

Tue 20 7.30pm Digital Curiosities and Delights at St James’ Church and Arts Centre.
An evening to showcase the work of our locally-based professional arts company High Peak Community Arts. Come and enjoy a presentation, including film and animation, of projects created with people from the local community. Refreshments available. Free.

The Peak District writer, his life and a one-act play. Organised by Intertheatre.

Sat 24 7.30pm Lantern Procession
Meet in the park below New Mills Central Station. Procession moves off at
7.30pm. Come on a magical lantern procession in the Torrs, walk over the famous Millennium bridge flanked by impressive fire sculptures and see hundreds of hand-made lanterns lighting up the evening.
Bring your own lantern if you have one, or just join in the procession.
Ends at Newtown Recreation Ground with a fantastic fireworks display and - back by popular demand! - music provided by the sensational ‘New Mills Jazz’, courtesy of New Mills School. Free. Bucket collection - please give generously to support the Festival.
Sun 26 11am Brindley Walk in The Torrs - Meet at the Heritage Centre.
Follow in the footsteps of the late Bill Brindley who used to live in The Torrs. Walk organised by Alan Jackson. Free.
Sun 26 6pm Songs of Praise at St James’ Church & Art Centre.
United Co-op New Mills Band will lead us in some favourite hymns for this traditional final Festival event. Come early to get a seat. Free.

Artist in Schools
In June there were Fair Trade Assemblies held in all eight primary schools and the secondary school in New Mills, all provided by United Co-operatives Ltd. Banner making workshops with artists Susan McCall and Katy McCall have taken place in July. The banners are on display throughout the town centre during the Festival.
