New Mills Christmas Lights Switch-on 2007

The festive season in New Mills officially started on Monday 3rd December with the town’s annual Christmas lights switch-on event.  The evening started with carol singing outside the Town Hall, accompanied by the United Co-op New Mills Band.  There was also a special carol performance by children from Thornsett Primary School.  The lights were then switched on by the New Mills Parade and Fete Royalty, including Queen Kirsty.

With the town illuminated, crowds then walked down to Market Street to continue the festivities.  Mulled wine and mince pies were served on ‘the Prom’, Santa was in attendance in his Grotto, there was a fun fair on the street, many of the local shops were open to allow people to do a spot of Christmas shopping and there was even a snow machine on hand to create a real festive atmosphere.

From humble beginnings just a few years ago, the switch-on is quickly becoming another major community event in the New Mills calendar.  The New Mills Christmas Lights Committee, which organises the event, would therefore wish to thank all those individuals, businesses and organisations who have helped to make this possible.

Full details of the event are contained in a free event programme, which is available at New Mills Town Hall, the Heritage Centre and various local businesses.  The programme also includes a 2008 calendar, which includes details of all the main events that are planned to take place in New Mills throughout 2008.
