One World Festival 2007

Saturday 23rd June 2007 - High Lea Park (View / Full Screen - F11 for full height photos)

Brighter Future ?

The unique New Mills One World Festival, now in its 18th year, takes place on Saturday 23rd June, from 12 noon to 6 pm in High Lea Park in New Mills. It is the region’s premier open-air free festival, promoting the themes of peace, the environment and world and community development.

Enjoy our fantastic line up of bands, musical entertainment and dancing. Appearing in the marquee are Four Square, Shameless, The Carbs, High Peak Samba and Ziggeratz.

The theme of this year’s festival is Environmental Access. Speakers include Sir Martin Doughty, Chair of Natural England and well known for his commitment to the environment. He will be speaking about the Kinder Trespass in 1932, when a large group of young ramblers from Manchester and Sheffield defied police and local landowners to roam across the High Peaks of Derbyshire. Sir Martin states ‘ The jailing of five young unemployed men for merely wanting to get away from the grime of city life and walk across the high moorland of north Derbyshire led to outrage and a prolonged campaign which ultimately led to the creation of the National Parks and the legal right of access to mountains and moorland.’

Also speaking will be Ernest Nama, Stockport’s Rights of Way Officer, who will talk generally about access to the environment.

The entertainment will include an excerpt from ‘On Common Ground’ a performance by High Peak Community Arts, which is a celebration of the struggle of ordinary people to gain access to the countryside we take for granted. Using music, multimedia and jump-cuts through time and space, the history of the struggle is explored and the audience is taken into a future of imagined consequences. The full performance will be shown at The Arts Theatre in New Mills, on 29th and 30th June.

There will be a wide range of interesting and informative stalls from charities, campaign groups and other not for profit organisations. Children will be well provided for, as always, with lots going on, including an arts stall. Local community artist Kerry Bertram will be carrying out an arts project with children and adults, making leaf mobiles. A wide range of refreshments will be available with home made cakes on the tea stall.

Come and enjoy the brilliant atmosphere with your friends and family in the beautiful setting of the park.

One World Festival bands 2007

Four Square – contemporary folk music from Cheethams School of Music

High Peak Samba from Buxton – Rio de Janeiro is the home of carnival and of samba dancing. With its interlacing pounding rhythms, samba drumming has become a popular pastime over recent years.  High Peak Samba present exotic, invigorating entertainment.

Shameless – Hayfield based pop/funk/soul, featuring Brendan Day and Graham Hirst from Gene Therapy.

The Carbs – specialising in up tempo R ‘n’ B and Rock ‘n’ Roll, with the odd rock classic thrown in for good measure. The Carbs have a wealth of experience and a driving piano and guitar led sound.

Ziggeratz – featuring Steve Rawlins (Gene Therapy), Buxton singer/guitarist Martin Hall and guest musicians.
Howard Oliver, who was the original music organiser for the festival, sadly passed away earlier this year. He had just formed the band Ziggeratz with Steve Rawlins. Steve, Martin and guests will be performing a tribute in his memory.
