New Mills Parade & Fete 2007

This year’s New Mills Parade and Fete (the new name for the Millers Parade and Fete) takes place on the 9th June, with a theme of ‘African Dream’.  Bands, troupes and attractions are now booked for what the organising committee hopes will be the biggest event ever since the carnival started up again in 2004.

This year, the fete will take place on Newtown Recreation Ground, which means that the route for the parade changes from that of previous years.  As has happened over the last few years, the parade will start off on High Street (vehicles) and Meal Street (Royalty, walking groups and other people on foot) and will then parade along Market Street, before turning left at the Pride of the Peaks and continuing down Union Road.  At the bottom of Union Road by the Queens Arms the procession will then turn right up Albion Road and will continue up Albion Road, past the Beehive Inn, towards Swizzels Matlow.  Just before Swizzels the Parade will turn into Wirksmoor Road and then immediately left into Grove Street, where the Parade will finish by Newtown Recreation Ground.

There will be whole host of bands, troupes and other entertainers performing both in the parade and on the fete field, including the United Co-op New Mills Band, the Chesterfield Musketeers, Missing Person, the Spirit Shockers, Stand out Riot, Stockport Silver Jubilees Morris Troupe and the one and only Billerettes.  There will also be entertainment before the parade, with the Kinder Handbells performing on the ‘Prom’ (Market Street) and a family fun fair taking place on the fete field both on the day and on the Thursday and Friday evenings before the big day (7th and 8th June).

As always, local groups, businesses and individuals are encouraged to enter a float in the parade, decorate their premises or house or join the parade in fancy dress and to encourage people prizes (certificates, rosettes and prize money) are being offered for the winners of various categories including best decorated house, pub, shop or establishment, best voluntary float, best kept vehicle, best decorated pushchair, bike or wheelchair, best fancy dress walking group, best fancy dress (categories for under and over 16s) and best head dress.  To enter or to obtain further information please contact Helen Young on 01663 741924 or email newmillsparade@fsmail.net.

There are also two competitions taking place in the run up to Parade and Fete day.  Firstly, there is a Scarecrow Competition, where prizes are up for grabs for the people who make the best scarecrow, and secondly, there is a ‘Find the Elephant Competition’ where £50 can be won for finding 6 elephants which have been hidden in shop windows in and around New Mills.  Full details of these competitions and all the other activities that are taking place, together with band profiles, quizzes and more are contained in the 2007 Parade and Fete Programme, which is available for sale (just £1) at various local shops, including Pricilla’s, Londis, Unicorn Wines, the Heritage Centre, Bryans Butchers and Ryans.  All proceeds from the programme, together with all other money raised, are used to pay for the parade and fete, with all surplus funds donated to local groups and charities (last year a total of £2500 was donated to a total of 14 groups).

Despite last year’s parade and fete clashing with England playing in the World Cup, the 2006 Parade was bigger than ever, with crowds lining the streets to watch the parade go by.  The organisers, however, are hoping that this year’s event will be even bigger and therefore hope that as many people as possible from New Mills and the surrounding area will be able to attend and enjoy the big day.

New Mills Royalty prepare for Parade Day

With the date of New Mills Parade and Fete fast approaching, the newly erected Royalty of New Mills took part in their first official photo call last weekend.  On a beautiful spring day at High Lea Park, reigning New Mills Queen, Emily Gregory, and Petal, Ellie Goodwin, welcomed the newly elected New Mills Royalty who are Kirsty Astill (Queen Elect), Danielle Jones (Junior Queen Elect), Anna Bagnall (Princess Elect), Emma Parker (Charity Petal Elect), Alissa Jones (Petal Elect) and Zoë Bagnall (Personality Petal Elect).  Reigning Petal Ellie will be returning as the new Rosebud.

Preparations for the Parade and Fete, which will be held on the 9th June, are almost complete and organisers are hoping that the event will be more successful than ever.  Full details of the event will be outlined in the event's programme, which will be on sale locally soon, and details will be also be published nearer the big day.  For further information, Jeff Lawton, Committee Chairman, can be contacted on 01663 743310 or by e-mail at newmillsparade@fsmail.net
