United Co-op New Mills Band

Annual Cup Competition 2002

The Annual Cup Competition held by the United Co-op New Mills Band took place on the 9th November and was attended by seventy members and friends of the band. The adjudicator for the evening was Stephen Critchlow, conductor of the Burbage Band. Stephen praised all the competitors for taking part and said he hoped that more members would compete in future years. The musicians competed for four trophies, which were presented by Ian Mason, Chairman of the United Co-op Central Region Member Relations Committee.

Amy Stiles playing a cornet was the winner of the Burton Cup and Flugel Horn player Poppy Scattergood won the Garlick Cup. In the group competing for the Beard Cup, Stacey Tideswell won playing a Tenor Horn and Carol Lee, another Tenor Horn player, topped the group for the Committee Cup.

Other trophies awarded were the Jim Farnsworth Trophy for a significant contribution to the band, which went to David Sweetmore; the New Mills Cup for most improved player in the main band went to Stacey Tideswell. Rona Heath who travels to New Mills each week from Oldham won the Norman Chadwick Memorial Trophy for best attendance in main band. Certificates for best attendance in the learner group went to Amy Stiles and for the Junior Band to Stacey Tideswell, all other competitors received a certificate for taking part.
