When founder members conceived the idea of an operatic society in New Mills in 1922, they could never have envisaged that it would be staging top-class musicals into the next millennium. Not only this, but it would be the proud owner of a theatre which retains its old-world charm, yet boasts a revolving stage, a catwalk and 500 seats. Such ownership of a theatre is a rare asset for an operatic society.

Although the society was formed primarily to perform musical productions, there was a period in the late 40s and early 50s when a series of plays were staged to raise much-needed revenue. Musicals returned in 1952 with 'No! No! Nanette!', and the last 50 years have seen at least one musical production each year.

In 1959, the then owners of the Art Theatre closed its doors for good and it was left to the society to take out several two-year leases on the building before eventually purchasing it in 1966, with much public support. Today, New Mills & District Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society welcomes to the theatre productions from a host of other organisations, with recent highlights including Dance Time 2002 and The Kinder Children's Choir.

Some 20 years ago the Friends of the Art Theatre Group was formed, and each year it puts on exciting pantomimes that have the double bonus of introducing young people to the delights of the Theatre, both as part of the audience as as budding actors.

2007 sees the society celebrating 86 years of entertaining the public with the production of ‘Anything Goes (Beaumont)’, closely followed by the pantomime ‘Jack & The Beanstalk’ .  The musical for 2008 will be announced shortly, and work is expected to start in the spring.
